As the 2025 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Championship kicks off in Abia State, Castmog Ladies head coach, Salako Samuel Sola, has expressed optimism about his youthful side, stressing that the team’s goals extend beyond simply gaining promotion to the top division.
According to the coach, the team has undergone rigorous preparations, including several high-profile friendly matches, aimed at building tactical discipline and mental resilience.
“Preparation for the NWFL Championship has been going on smoothly with a series of high-profile test matches to check the stability, level, and composure of the girls,” Sola said.
He explained that while promotion is the dream of every club, Castmog Ladies are also determined to showcase the talent of their players on a larger stage.
“Everyone wishes to get the promotion ticket, but we are not only after promotion. We also want to expose the girls to the world and showcase the good talent we have.”
Sola acknowledged that the club has faced challenges, particularly in player retention, with some leaving for opportunities in neighbouring countries due to financial constraints and family pressures.
“We faced many challenges — players leaving the team for neighbouring countries due to financial constraints, lack of orientation, and pressure from home. We tried to help, and although it wasn’t easy, we thank God we were able to overcome,” he said.
Castmog Ladies have built their identity around youth development. Most of the players are still in secondary school, ranging from JSS2 to SS3, and last season was mainly about gaining experience.
“This year, the players are better prepared both physically and mentally,” Sola explained, noting that the club has tested them in tough friendlies against established NWFL teams such as Bayelsa Queens, Robo, and Sunshine Queens.
“Our standard is catching them young. Last season was about gaining experience and staying in the Championship. Now, they have built confidence. We also know the value of experienced players, so we expose them to high-profile matches to prepare for the intensity of league games.”
The coach further predicted that his players could soon become a key part of Nigeria’s junior national teams.
“Moses Bako Nagogo called Castmog Ladies one of the youngest teams in the last Championship. I see these girls dominating the junior national teams in the nearest future, by God’s grace.”
Looking ahead, Sola concluded with optimism, insisting that hard work and dedication will eventually bring success.
“We pray that God crowns all our efforts with great success.”
Castmog Ladies will compete in Group A1, alongside Royal Queens, Gallant Queens, and First Mahi Babes, as the 2025 NWFL Championship gets underway.
