Team Delta’s female coach, Maureen Eke, was in a joyous mood after leading her side to a gold medal at the expense of Nigeria's U-17 team (the Flamingoes) in the final of the women's football event.
The match, which was played inside the main bowl of the MKO Abiola Stadium, ended goalless before the player of the match, Favour Oparanyanwu, saved two penalties to help Team Delta win 7-6 in the shootout.
The two teams were meeting for the second time, after the U-17 team narrowly defeated Team Delta 1-0 in the group stage.
The former Delta Queens and Super Falcons midfield maestro couldn’t hide her excitement after the game, saying her team showed determination, grit, and courage to beat the Flamingoes.
“I believed we could win this game. We wanted our pound of flesh after losing to them in the group stage, so we put in the work during training. We worked on our lapses from the first game, the girls played according to instructions, and the result is there for all to see.”
She also dedicated the win to the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Hon. Onoriode Oborevwori.
“This win is specially dedicated to our hardworking chairman. We sincerely thank him for his exemplary leadership, support, encouragement, the enabling environment he created for us, and his belief in our work.”
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, could not hide his excitement. He described the encounter as the highlight of the entire festival, praising the team for their composure and resilience under intense pressure.
“I had to leave the VIP section and join the crowd because it felt like a continental cup final,” Oborevwori said.
“The tension and anxiety were overwhelming, especially knowing that the entire stadium was supporting our opponents. But our girls stood strong, held their nerves, and delivered when it mattered most. I’m extremely proud of the team.”
