2025 NLO: Coach Sagiru Salisu Reflects on Shield City FC’s Breakout Season

Posted : 15 June 2025

Sagiru Salisu, head coach of Shield City Football Academy, has expressed heartfelt appreciation following his team’s outstanding performance at the 2025 Nationwide League One Division 1 (NLO25), hosted at the Bichi Center.

In their debut NLO campaign, Shield City FC made a bold impression with tactical discipline and standout performances that caught the attention of fans, scouts, and key football stakeholders across Nigeria.

Coach Salisu, a Kano-based CAF D licensed coach, took pride in what he called his “Wonder Kids”, a group of young, disciplined, and tactically intelligent players who displayed tremendous potential throughout the tournament.

“I'm truly impressed by how well my players are grasping and putting into practice what I teach them,” Coach Salisu said after the league concluded.

“Our experience in NLO1 has reinforced my belief that the work I'm doing is meaningful and making a real difference.”

Despite drawing interest from clubs outside Kano, including two academies in Abuja and one in Nasarawa State, Coach Salisu remains firmly committed to Shield City:

“I’ve received offers, but I turned them down because I genuinely enjoy the work I’m doing here at Shield City Football Academy. I’ve made it clear that I still have a mission to fulfill in developing young talent. When the right time comes to move, I’ll know—and I’ll let them know too.”

Shield City FC is fast gaining a reputation for identifying and nurturing raw talent, with an eye on developing players who can eventually compete at elite levels globally.

This grassroots vision is strongly backed by philanthropist Laura Wilson Sharpe, whose contributions to football development in Kano recently earned her a Kano State Football Association Award for excellence in grassroots sports support.
