Crown FC and Sporting Lagos began their 2025 Gold Cup campaigns in style with victories over Seamoriowo FC and GreenLock FC.
The 2025 Gold Cup tournament got underway in thrilling fashion as Crown FC and Sporting Lagos both secured important opening-day victories at the FC Ebedei Stadium in Apele-Sagamu. Crown FC recorded a commanding 2–0 win over Seamoriowo FC, while Sporting Lagos edged GreenLock FC 1–0 to claim maximum points from their first matches.
In the Group A and Group B fixtures, the two Nigerian National League (NNL) sides faced determined resistance from their Nationwide League One (NLO) opponents, who proved difficult to break down in the early stages.
The clash between Sporting Lagos and GreenLock FC began with the lower-tier side creating the better chances, but they failed to convert several opportunities that could have changed the game’s momentum. As the match wore on, Sporting Lagos grew into the contest, showcasing their superior organization and experience.
The breakthrough came in the 69th minute, when Lasisi Alabi pounced on a poor clearance from Prince Ogo, GreenLock FC’s goalkeeper, and calmly slotted the ball into an empty net. The goal handed Sporting Lagos a narrow but deserved victory and temporarily placed them at the top of Group B, pending the result of the Sunshine Stars vs FC Ebedei encounter.
In the day’s second match, veteran striker Ebenezer Odeyemi delivered a standout performance for Crown FC, scoring twice in just 12 minutes to inspire his side to a 2–0 victory over Seamoriowo FC. Having recently joined Crown FC from Osun United, Odeyemi’s experience and finishing quality made the difference after he was introduced in the second half.
Seamoriowo FC started the game brightly and held their own in the first half, but Crown FC took full control after the break. Odeyemi’s first goal came in the 62nd minute, before he sealed the win with another precise finish in the 74th minute, ensuring Crown FC began their campaign with a dominant display.
With two games completed on Matchday 1, Odeyemi now leads the 2025 Gold Cup goal-scoring chart with his brace, while Sporting Lagos and Crown FC both sit atop their respective groups as the competition gathers momentum in Sagamu.
