The Eagles of Mali thrilled West Africa with a stunning display of resilience in Casablanca, Morocco, as they booked a place in the quarterfinals of AFCON 2025 by defeating the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia. The match drew a crowd of 41,982 fans and ended 1-1 after full time, with Mali prevailing 3-2 on penalties.
Bilal Toure, on loan at Besiktas from Atalanta where he played alongside Nigeria’s Demola Lookman, scored the decisive penalty after teammates Diakité and Sinayoko converted their kicks, while Bissouma and Dorgelès missed. For Tunisia, Meriah and Saad scored, but the Malian goalkeeper saved Abdi and Achouri, and Meriah and Ben’s shots went wide.
The match saw Tunisia take the lead in the 88th minute when Elias Saad delivered a cross that Firas Chaouat nodded into the net. Mali equalized dramatically in stoppage time when Lassine Sinayoko converted a penalty in the 90+6th minute, sending the stadium into a frenzy.
Mali played with 10 men after Wayo Coulibaly received a straight red card in the 26th minute for stamping on a Tunisian player’s ankle. Both sides had battled through tough conditions, including heavy rain, showcasing tremendous physicality and determination.
In group stage results, Mali drew 0-0 with Comoros, 1-1 with hosts Morocco, and 1-1 with Zambia. Tunisia drew 1-1 with Tanzania, lost 2-3 to Nigeria, and defeated Uganda 3-2.
Historically, the Eagles of Mali, ranked 53rd in the world, have appeared at the AFCON finals 14 times, winning silver in 1972, bronze in 2012 and 2013, and finishing fourth in 2002 and 2004. Tunisia, ranked 41st, are competing in their 22nd tournament, winning the title in 2004, silver in 1965 and 1996, bronze in 1962, and fourth place in 2000 and 2019.
