The race for the 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title reaches its climax as six of the country’s top clubs converge in Port Harcourt for the Super Six championship playoffs.
With the league crown and Nigeria’s sole ticket to the CAF Women’s Champions League at stake, defending champions Bayelsa Queens, hosts Rivers Angels, Nasarawa Amazons, Edo Queens, Robo Queens, and debutants Abia Angels will battle over the coming days in what promises to be one of the most competitive editions of the tournament.
Much of the spotlight will fall on Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels, two of the most successful teams in the history of women’s football in Nigeria.
Bayelsa Queens
Bayelsa Queens arrive as defending champions and one of the most consistent sides in recent seasons.
The Prosperity Girls topped Group A during the regular season and are chasing a seventh league title, having previously been crowned champions in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2018, 2021/22, and 2024/25.
Having finished on the podium in four of the last five Super Six tournaments and won two of the last six editions, they possess the experience and winning mentality required to defend their crown successfully.
Rivers Angels
Standing in their path are hosts Rivers Angels, seven-time league champions and one of the most decorated clubs in the country.
The Pride of Rivers have lifted the league title in 1994, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2020/21.
Backed by home support in Port Harcourt, they will be eager to reclaim the trophy and move level with Pelican Stars’ record of eight league crowns.
Their impressive playoff pedigree and ability to thrive under pressure make them genuine contenders.
Last season’s runners-up, Nasarawa Amazons, will also fancy their chances after another strong campaign. The Lafia-based side have consistently challenged for honours in recent years, finishing second in both 2022 and 2025.
Having narrowly missed out on the title last season, the Amazons will be determined to finally turn near-misses into championship success and secure a third league triumph.
Former champions Edo Queens return to the Super Six aiming to recapture the title they won in 2024.
The Benin City side have rebuilt their reputation after disappointing playoff outings between 2021 and 2023 and remain one of the most balanced teams in the competition. Their blend of experience and youthful quality could prove decisive in the title race.
Among the challengers, Robo Queens will seek to upset the established order. Returning to the Super Six for the first time since 2023, the Lagos club have impressed with their youthful squad and fearless style of play.
Having achieved a third-place finish in 2021, they now dream of securing a historic maiden league title.
Meanwhile, Abia Angels enter uncharted territory after qualifying for the Super Six for the first time in their history.
The Umuahia-based side have been one of the surprise stories of the season and will look to continue their remarkable rise.
With no pressure and plenty of belief, the newcomers could emerge as the tournament’s dark horses.
As the championship playoffs get underway, pedigree, ambition, experience, and emerging talent will collide in Port Harcourt.
Whether Bayelsa Queens successfully defend their title, Rivers Angels capitalize on home advantage, or a new champion emerges, the battle for the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership crown promises plenty of drama and excitement.
