2025/2026 Season: Katsina United unveils ambitious plan to challenge NPFL elite

Posted : 13 August 2026

The Katsina State Government has approved a comprehensive plan aimed at repositioning Katsina United Football Club for greater competitiveness and sustainable success ahead of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The plan, which followed consultations with key football stakeholders and a review of the club’s performance during the 2025/2026 season, was presented to and approved by the State Executive Council.

The measures are designed to strengthen the club’s administration, improve logistics and infrastructure, enhance revenue generation and create a stronger platform for sporting success.

Among the key interventions approved by the council is the provision of a new branded CNG-powered bus for Katsina United to facilitate convenient and timely transportation to away fixtures. The government also approved the use of air transportation for long-distance matches to reduce travel fatigue and improve the team’s preparation.

Other areas targeted for improvement include stadium security and infrastructure, ticketing and revenue management, fan mobilisation, youth development and the overall management structure of the club.

According to the state government, the immediate objective is to guide Katsina United to a top-four finish in the NPFL, mount a strong challenge in the Federation Cup, secure promotion of its junior team to the Nigeria National League (NNL) and attract increased corporate sponsorship.

In the medium term, the government has set its sights on transforming Katsina United into a genuine title contender capable of winning both the NPFL and Federation Cup.

The government expressed confidence that the approved measures would translate into concrete improvements on and off the pitch, while assuring supporters and the wider football community of its commitment to restoring Katsina United to its place among Nigeria’s leading football clubs.

The development comes, however, against the backdrop of a tragic loss suffered by the club following the death of one of its players, Chinedu Uzor, who reportedly passed away on the football field on Wednesday.

The state government described Uzor’s death as a painful loss to Katsina United, his teammates, coaches, management, supporters and the wider football community.

It extended its condolences to the late player’s family, friends, teammates and loved ones, praying that Almighty God grants him eternal rest and gives his family the strength to bear the loss.

The government also thanked the State Executive Council, football stakeholders, supporters and the media for their continued support and partnership with Katsina United.
