Rivers Angels began their quest for another Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six title on a winning note after edging FC Robo Queens 3-2 in a pulsating Matchday One encounter at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Saturday.
The Port Harcourt-based side showed their championship pedigree, surviving a late FC Robo Queens fightback to claim all three points in one of the most entertaining matches of the opening day.
The hosts wasted little time asserting themselves and nearly opened the scoring in the first minute, but Grace Saliu failed to hit the target from a promising position.
The striker quickly made amends moments later when she reacted fastest to a loose ball inside the penalty area following a goalmouth scramble, calmly slotting home to give Rivers Angels an early lead.
Despite their bright start, Rivers Angels struggled to maintain momentum as a series of offside calls disrupted their attacking rhythm. The interruptions allowed FC Robo Queens to gradually settle into the contest and pose a greater threat going forward.
Their persistence paid off midway through the first half when a well-worked attacking move split open the Rivers defence. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was on hand to finish into an empty net, bringing the Lagos side level at 1-1.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Robo Queens continued to press and almost capitalised on a costly error by the Rivers goalkeeper, who misjudged a routine ball. However, she recovered just in time to avert the danger.
Rivers Angels responded before the break with a couple of opportunities but were unable to restore their advantage, sending both teams into halftime level.
The second half largely belonged to the hosts, who emerged with renewed purpose and displayed greater efficiency in front of goal.
Just after the hour mark, Abasiofon Uwah restored Rivers Angels' lead with a powerful finish from a corner-kick situation, firing the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-1.
Three minutes later, the hosts struck again. A swift counterattack down the flank exposed the Robo defence, and Ramotalahi Kareem completed the move with a composed finish to extend the lead to 3-1.
With Rivers Angels seemingly in control, Robo Queens refused to give up. Adegbuyi grabbed her second goal of the afternoon with 10 minutes remaining, finishing off another impressive move to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finale.
The visitors nearly snatched a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time when a Robo attacker rounded the goalkeeper and appeared destined to score. However, a timely defensive clearance preserved Rivers Angels' lead and ultimately secured a hard-earned victory.
The result gives Rivers Angels a perfect start to their Super Six campaign, while FC Robo Queens can take encouragement from a spirited performance despite ending up on the losing side.
