2025/2026 NWFL Super 6 Matchday 3: Bayelsa Queens bounce back to sink hosts Rivers Angels

Posted : 11 June 2026

Bayelsa Queens have reignited their 2025/2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super 6 title ambitions with a spirited 2-1 victory over hosts Rivers Angels in an entertaining South-South derby at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.

After a difficult start to the championship, the Prosperity Girls showed character and determination to secure their first win of the competition, while inflicting a second consecutive defeat on their regional rivals.

Coming into the encounter, Bayelsa Queens were under pressure following a 1-1 draw against Abia Angels and a narrow 2-1 loss to Nasarawa Amazons. Rivers Angels, on the other hand, were seeking redemption after suffering a surprise defeat to Abia Angels despite opening their campaign with a thrilling victory over FC Robo Queens.

The hosts enjoyed most of the early possession and looked the more threatening side in the opening stages, but Bayelsa Queens remained compact and disciplined at the back.

Their patience paid off in the 29th minute when Doshima Taarnum delivered an inviting corner kick into the penalty area. Rivers Angels goalkeeper Shukurat Bakare failed to make clean contact with her attempted punch, allowing Chiamaka Ezekwugo to head home and give Bayelsa Queens the lead.

Rivers Angels returned from the break determined to find an equaliser and eventually got their reward in the 58th minute. Abasiofon Uwah's attacking run forced a Bayelsa defender into a handball inside the penalty area, and the forward confidently converted from the spot to restore parity.

However, Bayelsa Queens responded impressively to the setback. Just five minutes after conceding, Taarnum crowned an outstanding individual performance by scoring the decisive goal, finishing clinically to put her side back in front.

With the advantage restored, the Yenagoa-based outfit tightened up defensively and successfully frustrated Rivers Angels' attempts to force another comeback. Their disciplined display ensured they held on for all three points at the final whistle.

The victory moves Bayelsa Queens to four points after three matches, boosting their chances in the title race. For Rivers Angels, the defeat leaves them stuck on three points and facing an uphill task in their pursuit of the NWFL crown.

Taarnum emerged as the standout performer of the contest, providing the assist for the opening goal before netting the winner to guide Bayelsa Queens to a crucial derby triumph.

This vital triumph drastically changes the momentum for the Yenagoa-based club as the championship tournament progresses. By overcoming their regional rivals on home turf, the former champions have demonstrated the resilience needed to challenge for the ultimate prize. The technical crew will now look to sustain this winning formula to keep pressure on the league leaders in the upcoming matchdays.
