2025/2026 NWFL Super 6: Abia Angels defy odds to finish Fourth in historic debut

Posted : 15 June 2026

Abia Angels chief coach Judith Benson has applauded her players for exceeding expectations after the club secured a commendable fourth-place finish in their maiden appearance at the 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six in Port Harcourt.

The Umuahia-based side wrapped up their campaign with a 1-1 draw against FC Robo Queens on the final day, ending the tournament with six points and finishing ahead of two fellow contenders in the standings.

Reflecting on the team's performance, Benson revealed that the club faced a major setback just before the competition began, with the head coach being asked to step aside on the eve of the tournament.

“Our head coach was told to step aside a day before the Super Six. However, the foundation and template he established remained with the team, and we stayed faithful to that philosophy throughout the competition,” she said.

Despite the unexpected disruption, Abia Angels produced a series of determined performances to emerge as one of the surprise packages of the tournament.

Benson expressed satisfaction with how the players responded to doubts surrounding their participation.

“Many people did not expect us to make an impact, but we have shown that we did not come here just to make up the numbers. The players worked hard and demonstrated great character,” she stated.

The coach also acknowledged the need for continuous growth in her own career, noting that the experience had provided valuable lessons.

“As chief coach, I will continue to assess my performance and identify areas where I can improve,” she added.

Benson further highlighted the importance of the Super Six platform in exposing players to top-level competition and career opportunities. According to her, the presence of scouts, agents, and national team selectors served as a major source of motivation for the squad.

“Just being here inspires the players because they know they have the opportunity to be seen, showcase their abilities, and build a name for themselves,” she said.

Abia Angels’ impressive debut campaign has been widely viewed as a positive step forward for the club, with the team leaving Port Harcourt having earned respect for their resilience and competitiveness against some of the league’s most established sides.

The Umuahia-based club proved that tactical discipline and mental toughness can overcome sudden administrative disruptions on the big stage. This landmark fourth-place finish sets a strong foundation for the team's future aspirations in top-flight women's football. Having successfully made their mark against experienced rivals, Abia Angels return home with valuable tournament exposure and a heightened reputation.
