2025/2026 NWFL Season: Salary Crisis Threatens Osun Babes’ Campaign

Posted : 05 February 2026

Osun Babes’ debut campaign in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership is facing serious jeopardy as a mounting salary crisis has left players on the brink, with some reportedly considering a boycott of league fixtures.

The club, which earned its top-flight status by acquiring the slot of Imo Strikers Queens, is experiencing internal unrest following reports of unpaid salaries, bonuses, and allowances for over four months. What was intended to be a career step forward for many players has instead turned into a daily struggle for survival.

Speaking anonymously, one player described the harsh conditions within the camp, revealing that only a handful of players have received a token payment of ₦60,000 since the start of the season—a sum far from sufficient to cover basic living expenses amid current economic challenges. She added that some players now rely on fan support just to get by.

“We came here believing this would improve our careers and lives, but the reality is very different. Some of us are struggling to feed, and the little money sent in January cannot solve the debts we have accumulated over months,” she said.

The player further explained that many squad members had enjoyed more stable salary structures at their previous clubs but were enticed to join Osun Babes by promises of better conditions—promises that have yet to materialize.

“We were assured that things would improve in January, but only ₦60,000 was paid to some of us. It is discouraging, and we feel abandoned,” she added.

The situation has not only affected team morale but now threatens the club’s participation in upcoming NWFL fixtures, as players insist they may abstain from matches until outstanding payments are cleared.

With the NWFL season underway, attention is turning to Osun Babes’ management and the Osun State Government for urgent intervention to resolve the crisis and safeguard the welfare of the players.
