Heartland Queens FC displayed remarkable resilience as they recovered from a two-goal deficit to force a 2–2 draw against Naija Ratels FC during their 2025/2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Matchday 4 clash at Bwari Stadium, Abuja.
The game began cautiously, with both sides assessing each other. Naija Ratels, supported by their home crowd, gained momentum and opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Ogunwa Adiobi timed her run perfectly to slot the ball past Heartland Queens’ goalkeeper Christiana Obia, despite appeals for offside.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 25th minute through a stunning long-range free kick from Onu Markwel, emphasizing Naija Ratels’ early dominance as they entered halftime comfortably 2–0 up.
The second half belonged to Heartland Queens. Motivated by a halftime talk from coach Obi Ogbala, they pressed high and pinned Naija Ratels deep in their own half. Captain Chimebere Opara appeared to pull one back five minutes after the restart, but the goal was disallowed for offside, signaling the visitors’ intent.
Heartland Queens finally broke through in the 72nd minute when Emmanuella James, in a Man-of-the-Match performance, raced onto a through ball and fired low past goalkeeper Vincent Massey to reduce the deficit.
Momentum swung entirely in their favor, and eight minutes later, Faith Samson reacted fastest during a goalmouth scramble to volley home the equalizer, completing a dramatic turnaround to 2–2.
Despite late pressure from Heartland Queens, including promising combinations from substitutes Winifred and Monica, neither side could find a winner. The draw lifts Heartland Queens to four points in the NWFL Premiership, with attention now turning to Matchday 5 against Pacesetters FC in Ibadan.
