Heartland Queens will attempt to reverse the first-term whiplash against former champions and neighbours, Rivers Angels, in Wednesday's NWFL Premiership matchday 16 at the mainbowl of the fortress, Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Imo state.
The next-door neighbours are familiars and perennials in the round leather game, having met each other almost countless times in competitive and non-competitive games.
The most recent being the first-term season's 5-0 bitter pills the Garden City side forced down the throats of the Owerri mainstreams on the turf of Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
Prior to the matchday 16 showdown, the combatants experienced same fortunes in the hands of their respective matchday 15 opponents.
While the Port Harcourt-based side respectfully shared the spoils goalless with the neighbours and reigning champions, Bayelsa Queens, on home soil, the Owerri landladies split the spoils, too, barren on the road at Ibom Angels in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state to set up the tone for the midweek clash.
Obviously, the encounter on Wednesday has mixed interests for the premier leaguers. While the visitors would be playing for palpable pride, having already secured the season's most prized premium ticket—Super Six spot—with three matches to end the regular season, the homers have every need to fight for the whole three points at stake aimed at brightening their not-too-impressive rating on the nine-team Group A log as well as self-pride after the first-term all-time record's misfortune.
The back-to-back draws against the top-flight newcomers, Pacesetters Queens and Ibom Angels, may not have been the dreams of the Owerri mainstreams going into those games, given its poor consequences on their position on the log; the Owerri side will want to reassert the hitherto invincibility of their ground to largely all previous visitors, and adding the Port Harcourt side to the victims' rosters will be very welcoming.
The Owerri side's manager, Obi Ogbala, will do well to rely on his best performers, especially in the immediate past game at Ibom Angels, to make sweet-scented memories of the reverse game against Rivers Angels. Though a few additions may not be ruled out with the impressive recoveries of the injured ones in their midst.
The Owerri landladies are seventh on the nine-team Group A log on 16 points compared with the guests' second shot on princely 31 points and 15 points in all behind the leaders and champions, Bayelsa Queens.
The next all-important date after the Owerri showdown for Heartland Queens will be the season's battle royale and short road ride at champions, Bayelsa Queens in Yenagoa.
The stakes remain high for Heartland Queens as they navigate a difficult run of fixtures against the league's heavyweights. Securing a positive result against Rivers Angels is essential for their momentum before facing the reigning champions. This midweek clash serves as a vital opportunity for the Owerri side to restore their home dominance and climb the Group A standings.
