Nasarawa Amazons staged an impressive comeback to claim their first victory of the 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership season, defeating Delta Queens 2-1 in an exhilarating match in Lafia.
The season opener featured an intense contest, with Delta Queens taking the early lead through a well-taken free kick in the 14th minute, catching the Amazons off guard just outside the 18-yard box.
The visitors maintained pressure for much of the first half, controlling set pieces and defending their advantage effectively.
The tide turned as Nasarawa Amazons regained control, employing high pressing tactics and precise passing.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 40th minute when Jones Imoh delivered a long-range strike, allowing Shobowale to equalize after a miscommunication between the Delta Queens defender and goalkeeper.
Five minutes later, Ayatsea Hembafan produced a brilliant dribble and followed it with a powerful shot to score the winning goal, securing a 2-1 victory for the home side despite Delta Queens’ attempts to respond.
Speaking after the game, Nasarawa Amazons coach Christopher Danjuma expressed satisfaction with the result, saying, “We thank God for the three points. Starting on a good note is crucial, but we have much work ahead. We need to blend the team better to meet the standards we previously set. Looking ahead, our objective is to focus on scoring, especially with two away matches ahead. I expect nothing less than four points from these games. Delta Queens proved to be better than we anticipated based on our preseason encounter.”
Delta Queens coach Keshi Samson, meanwhile, refused to place blame on his squad, acknowledging Nasarawa Amazons’ superior performance.
“They were the better side today. I’m still learning, and I see potential in my girls. My focus now is to identify and work on our weaknesses moving forward,” he said. Nasarawa Amazons will next travel to Lagos to face Dannaz Ladies in Match Day 2 of the NWFL Premiership.
