2025/2026 NPFL: Plateau United Turn to Ogunbote as Relegation Fears Deepen

Plateau United FC have stepped up efforts to arrest their alarming slide in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), with experienced tactician Gbenga Ogunbote emerging as the leading candidate to take charge of the struggling Jos-based club.

The former league champions are rooted to the bottom of the NPFL standings, prompting the club’s management to take decisive action following a disappointing first stanza. Plateau United managed just eight wins from 19 matches, suffering 12 defeats and one draw, leaving them 19th on the log with 19 points.

This poor run ultimately led to the dismissal of Shola Ayeni after a mid-season performance review by the club hierarchy.

With relegation concerns mounting, Plateau United have widened their search for a proven coach capable of stabilizing the team. Initial approaches were reportedly made to Fidelis Ilechukwu, the club’s former coach and current Rangers International manager, but his commitment to Enugu made a return unlikely.

Attention has now shifted to Ogunbote, a respected figure in the domestic league and former Shooting Stars Sports Club handler. The seasoned coach is currently unattached after leaving the Ibadan outfit last season, making him an attractive option for a club in urgent need of direction.

In a related development, Plateau United officials are reported to have held consultations at the highest level, with Ilechukwu and members of his camp attending a closed-door meeting with the Plateau State Governor as part of broader discussions on the club’s future.

While no official announcement has been made, sources close to the club indicate that negotiations are ongoing as Plateau United seek to rebuild their technical department and revive hopes of survival in the NPFL.
