Defending champions Remo Stars saw their survival hopes take another major hit after falling 2–1 to Barau FC in a dramatic Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 34 clash at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

In a game that carried huge implications at the bottom of the table, Remo Stars initially showed promise, breaking the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Hadi Haruna capitalised on a moment of hesitation in Barau’s defence to give the visitors a crucial lead, briefly lifting their chances in the relegation battle.

But that advantage proved short-lived as Barau FC responded with urgency and precision. Just three minutes later, Joseph Atule powered home a header from Sugau Aliyu’s pinpoint delivery, restoring parity and swinging momentum back to the hosts.

With tension rising and the stakes at their highest, Barau FC delivered the decisive blow late in the game. In the 86th minute, Joseph Kemin found space in the box and fired past the goalkeeper to complete the comeback, leaving the visitors stunned.

The defeat further deepens the crisis for Remo Stars, who now sit 19th on the table with 40 points, firmly entrenched in the relegation zone despite their status as defending champions.

Barau FC Technical Adviser Eugene Agagbe lauded his players’ resilience and commitment, emphasizing their ability to stay focused and execute under pressure in a high-stakes encounter.

On the other hand, Remo Stars coach Usman Abdalla acknowledged the setback but insisted the fight is not over, urging his side to regroup quickly as they battle to preserve their top-flight status.

The victory sees Barau FC climb to ninth position with 46 points from 34 matches, while Remo Stars’ situation grows increasingly precarious with the season nearing its climax.

The result highlights the unpredictable nature of the league as the title holders face the very real prospect of a shocking exit from the top flight. Barau FC's late heroics have secured their mid-table safety, but for Remo Stars, the remaining fixtures are now must-win encounters. All eyes will be on the champions to see if they can produce a late miracle to avoid the drop.
