2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 2: Injury Woes Hit Kwara United Ahead of Rivers United Clash

Posted : 30 August 2025

Kwara United FC have been dealt a blow ahead of their NPFL Matchday 2 clash against Rivers United, with injuries ruling out key players Saheed Olaniyi and Akanni Akeem from the traveling squad to Port Harcourt.

The Harmony Boys face a daunting task at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, where Rivers United, coached by the experienced Finidi George, are aiming for a perfect start to the 2025/2026 season.

Rivers United opened their campaign with a hard-fought stalemate against defending champions Remo Stars FC at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. Meanwhile, Kwara United produced an encouraging performance against Ikorodu City, but despite several shots on target, they were denied by goalkeeper Michael Atata, who proved decisive for the visitors in Ilorin.

With the injury setbacks, Kwara United head coach Tunde Sanni is expected to reshuffle his starting XI. Despite the challenges, the Harmony Boys remain optimistic about building on their opening-day performance.

The fixture has proven competitive in recent years. Kwara United and Rivers United last met at the ValueJet Preseason Tournament, where Kwara clinched a narrow 1–0 win thanks to a strike from new signing Gidado Toheeb.

In their last five NPFL meetings, Kwara United boast two wins, Rivers United have managed one victory, while two encounters ended in draws. However, since 2017, Rivers United have held a slight edge with more overall wins.

As both sides renew their rivalry, fans can expect another fiercely contested battle between the Harmony Boys and the Pride of Rivers.
