2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 38: Warri Wolves escape relegation after dramatic comeback victory

Warri Wolves FC produced a dramatic comeback performance to retain their Nigeria Premier Football League status after edging past Abia Warriors FC in a tension-filled Matchday 38 encounter of the 2025/2026 NPFL season.

Heading into the decisive fixture under immense pressure, the Seasiders knew only a positive result could guarantee survival in the top division.

However, the situation became even more difficult after Abia Warriors drew first blood through Imoh Obot in the early stages of the match, silencing the home supporters and raising fears of relegation.

Despite the setback, Warri Wolves responded with resilience and determination, gradually growing into the contest as they searched for a lifeline. Their persistence eventually paid off through in-form striker Orji Chisom, whose outstanding second-half display completely transformed the game.

The forward, who joined the Delta State side from Akwa United FC before the start of the campaign, emerged as the hero of the day with a decisive brace that sparked wild celebrations among the home fans.

Chisom first restored parity with a composed finish before netting the winning goal in the closing stages to complete a memorable turnaround and secure a priceless victory for the Seasiders.

The result ensured Warri Wolves mathematically avoided relegation, capping off a difficult season in dramatic fashion and confirming their place in the NPFL for another campaign.

Having successfully navigated the survival battle, attention is now expected to shift toward rebuilding the squad ahead of next season, as the club aims to move away from relegation struggles and establish itself as a stronger contender in the league.

The Seasiders thus finished the 2025/2026 NPFL season in 13th position with 48 points.

The dramatic final-day victory serves as a vital lifeline for the Delta State side after an intense and challenging campaign. By overcoming the early setback against Abia Warriors, the team demonstrated the necessary grit to maintain their top-flight status. The club's management and coaching staff must now look toward long-term restructuring to avoid similar struggles in the upcoming season.
