2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 38: Rivers United Win in Vain as Rangers Secure Title

Posted : 25 May 2026

Rivers United FC ended their 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League campaign on a bittersweet note after defeating Katsina United FC 3-0 in Port Harcourt, but still fell short in the race for the league title.

The rain-soaked encounter at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday had all the ingredients of a dramatic finale as Rivers United faithful filled the stands with hopes of witnessing a historic triumph.

Heading into the decisive Matchday 38 fixture, the Pride of Rivers knew only victory would keep their title ambitions alive. However, they also needed Rangers International FC to drop points against Ikorodu City FC in Lagos.

While Rivers United handled their own assignment impressively, results elsewhere denied them the championship as Rangers held firm to clinch their ninth NPFL title.

Despite the disappointment, Finidi George’s side produced a commanding display in front of their home supporters.

The hosts broke the deadlock in the 19th minute after a Katsina United defender was penalized for handball inside the area. Chijioke Mbaoma stepped forward and calmly converted the resulting penalty to hand Rivers United a deserved lead.

Buoyed by the opener, the Port Harcourt side controlled possession and resisted the difficult weather conditions to maintain their advantage heading into the halftime break.

The second half saw the home side continue their dominance even as heavy rain persisted across the stadium.

Rivers United doubled their lead in the 63rd minute through Okon Aniekeme, whose powerful effort from outside the box left the Katsina United goalkeeper with no chance.

Four minutes later, Mbaoma grabbed his second goal of the evening to complete the emphatic victory and ignite celebrations among the home fans.

Although the result was not enough to deliver the league crown, Rivers United wrapped up their campaign with an impressive performance that reflected their resilience and consistency throughout the season.

The commanding victory on the final day ensures the Port Harcourt-based side concludes a highly competitive campaign on a positive note. Finidi George's men demonstrated great tactical discipline and attacking flair despite the heavy downpour and the mounting pressure. As attention now turns to the off-season, the Pride of Rivers will look to build on this solid foundation to launch a stronger title challenge next year.
