2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 37: Rivers United push NPFL title race to final day with comeback win in Bauchi

Posted : 11 May 2026

Rivers United FC kept the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League title race alive after battling from behind twice to defeat Wikki Tourists FC 3-2 in a dramatic Match Day 37 encounter at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi.

The high-stakes clash delivered excitement from start to finish as both sides fought for survival at opposite ends of the table.

The hosts drew first blood in the 21st minute through Mairiga J., sending the Bauchi crowd into celebration. But Rivers United responded positively and restored parity ten minutes before the break when Handsome Surveyor calmly slotted home after a sustained attacking move.

Wikki Tourists came out strongly after halftime and regained their advantage in the 47th minute courtesy of Imamu B., putting pressure back on the visitors.

However, the Port Harcourt side showed resilience and determination in pursuit of maximum points. Experienced forward Chijioke Mbaoma brought Rivers United level once again in the 59th minute with a composed finish to silence the home supporters.

With the game heading towards a tense conclusion, Rivers United found the decisive breakthrough in the 83rd minute when Taofeek Otaniyi finished clinically to complete a remarkable comeback for Finidi George’s side.

The crucial away victory not only secured Rivers United a place in next season’s CAF Champions League, but also ensured the NPFL title race will go down to the final day, with the Pride of Rivers sitting just one point behind leaders Rangers International FC.

For Wikki Tourists, the defeat confirmed their relegation from the NPFL, ending their stay in the top flight in heartbreaking fashion before their home fans.

This remarkable comeback victory keeps the pressure on league leaders Rangers International while solidifying Rivers United's status as a continental representative for next season. The result leaves the title race on a knife-edge, ensuring a dramatic conclusion to the campaign as the battle for the trophy reaches its climax.
