2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 36: Remo Stars’ title defence unravels in Aba defeat

Posted : 04 May 2026

Defending champions Remo Stars saw their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign take another damaging hit after a 2-1 defeat to Enyimba International FC in Aba, a result that leaves their survival hopes hanging by a thread.

In a dramatic Match Day 36 encounter at the Enyimba International Stadium, the visitors showed early promise and briefly reminded spectators of their title-winning pedigree.

Their attacking intent paid off in the 21st minute when they broke the deadlock with a well-worked move that stunned the home crowd.

However, Enyimba responded with urgency and composure. Just seven minutes after conceding, Stanley Dimgba restored parity with a timely finish, shifting momentum back to the hosts before the break.

The decisive moment arrived shortly after the restart, as Chidera Michael struck in the 49th minute to complete the turnaround.

The goal sparked wild celebrations in Aba and underlined Enyimba’s growing confidence under new coach Emmanuel Gustavo.

Despite late attempts from Remo Stars to salvage a point, Enyimba held firm to secure all three points, continuing their upward push on the table.

The victory lifts the People’s Elephant to 11th position with 46 points, easing immediate pressure and reinforcing their steady climb away from the danger zone.

For Remo Stars, the situation is far more precarious. Now languishing in 18th place with 43 points from 36 matches, the reigning champions are staring at the very real possibility of relegation—a stark contrast to their triumph just a season ago.

With only a handful of matches remaining, Remo Stars must quickly rediscover form or risk one of the most dramatic title-to-relegation downturns in NPFL history.

The defeat in Aba leaves the defending champions with no room for error in their final fixtures of the season. Enyimba's clinical second-half display has bolstered their mid-table standing, while Remo Stars now face a desperate battle to preserve their top-flight status.
