2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 36: Rangers grind out vital win to hold off title rivals

Posted : 04 May 2026

Rangers International tightened their grip on the Nigeria Premier Football League title race with a hard-earned 2-0 victory over Bayelsa United, but the performance told a story far more complex than the scoreline suggests.

At this stage of the campaign, results carry more weight than aesthetics—and Rangers delivered exactly that. Yet beneath the surface of another crucial three points lies a team still searching for balance between control and composure.

The Enugu side began with the urgency expected of title contenders. Their pressing was coordinated, their passing crisp, and their attacking intent unmistakable.

That early authority translated into a deserved opener in the 31st minute, when Chidiebere Nwobodo capped a flowing move with a composed finish, reinforcing Rangers’ dominance in the first half.

However, rather than building on that momentum, Rangers retreated into a less assured version of themselves after the break.

Bayelsa United, with little to lose, grew in confidence and began to exploit gaps in midfield. Rangers’ inability to sustain their earlier intensity invited pressure, turning what should have been a controlled outing into a tense affair.

Defensive discipline and goalkeeping reliability ultimately proved decisive, as the hosts weathered a period that could easily have shifted the contest.

For head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, the contrast between both halves was impossible to ignore.

While the result strengthens Rangers’ title credentials, the manner of their second-half display raises questions about their game management under pressure.

The decisive moment arrived late, when Godwin Obaje struck in the 85th minute to put the contest beyond doubt.

His 12th goal of the season not only secured the points but also highlighted his continued importance in delivering in key moments.

With just two matches remaining, Rangers remain top of the table, holding a narrow one-point advantage over Rivers United. The equation is simple: win, and the title is theirs.

Yet this performance serves as a cautionary tale. In a title race defined by fine margins, lapses in concentration or control could undo months of hard work.

As they head into decisive fixtures against Bendel Insurance and Wikki Tourists, Rangers must rediscover the consistency that defined their first-half display.

The finish line is in sight, but the final steps demand precision, discipline, and unwavering focus.

This hard-fought victory keeps the Flying Antelopes in the driving seat for the NPFL crown. While the late surge from Bayelsa United tested their resolve, Rangers' ability to secure the result ensures their fate remains in their own hands as the season reaches its dramatic conclusion.
