Kwara United delivered one of their most determined and disciplined performances of the season, holding Niger Tornadoes to a 2–2 draw despite playing over 50 minutes with 10 men in a fiercely contested Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 36 encounter at the Bako-Kontagora Stadium.
The Harmony Boys showed a strong mentality from the outset, responding swiftly to an early setback after AbdulRasheed Shehu converted from the penalty spot in the 26th minute to give the hosts the lead.
Kwara United restored parity just three minutes later through Babatunde Bright, whose composed finish underlined the visitors’ intent to compete.
The game’s defining moment came in the 35th minute when Toyeeb Gidado was shown a straight red card, leaving Kwara United with a numerical disadvantage for the remainder of the contest.
Rather than capitulate, the visitors regrouped impressively, maintaining defensive shape and showing tactical discipline.
Their resilience was rewarded in the 65th minute when Akanni Akeem capped a swift attacking move to give Kwara United a surprising lead, silencing the home crowd and raising hopes of a crucial away win.
However, sustained late pressure from Niger Tornadoes eventually took its toll. In the 86th minute, Ismail Sarki found the equaliser to rescue a point for the hosts, breaking the resistance of the determined visitors.
Despite the late setback, Kwara United’s performance will serve as a major boost in their fight for survival.
The Harmony Boys now sit 16th on the table with 44 points from 36 matches and will turn their attention to a decisive upcoming fixture against Enyimba, where their NPFL status could be on the line.
The hard-fought draw highlights the competitive spirit of the NPFL as the season reaches its climax. Kwara United must now carry this momentum into their final fixtures to secure their place in the top flight. Both teams walked away with a point that could prove vital in their respective league standings.
