2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 35: Clinical Abia Warriors edge Ikorodu City in Aba thriller

Posted : 20 April 2026

Abia Warriors showcased resilience and tactical sharpness to secure a valuable 2–1 victory over Ikorodu City in a fiercely contested Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 35 clash at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.

Rather than a one-sided display, this encounter unfolded as a tightly balanced contest between two sides with continental ambitions.

However, it was Abia Warriors’ superior efficiency in decisive moments that ultimately made the difference.

Coach Imama Amapakabo opted for minimal alterations to his lineup, introducing Fatai Abdullahi in place of Casmir Azubuike, an adjustment that maintained the team’s structural stability while offering fresh energy.

The game burst into life from kickoff, with both teams committing bodies forward and creating early openings. Abia Warriors signaled intent but were initially wasteful, as Valentine Ugwu squandered a clear chance from close range.

Their persistence paid off in the 20th minute when Paul Samson rose highest to head home a well-delivered free kick from Innocent Gabriel, giving the hosts a deserved lead.

Ikorodu City responded with purpose and composure. Their equalizer in the 36th minute came from an inspired long-range effort by Remi Adeoye, who capitalized on defensive hesitation to restore parity in spectacular fashion.

The closing stages of the first half proved decisive. Just as the visitors were settling into rhythm, Abia Warriors struck again. Paul Samson turned provider, threading a precise pass through the defense for Valentine Ugwu, who redeemed himself with a composed chip over goalkeeper Michael Atata to restore the hosts’ lead on the stroke of halftime.

The second half saw Abia Warriors adopt a more controlled approach, focusing on defensive organization while probing on set pieces and transitions.

They briefly thought they had extended their lead when Fatai Abdullahi powered in a strike from a corner, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

Ikorodu City continued to threaten sporadically on the counter, but the Warriors’ backline remained disciplined, effectively neutralizing attacking advances.

Amapakabo’s substitutions, reintroducing Azubuike and adding fresh legs in key areas, helped maintain structure and energy levels as the hosts managed the game’s closing phases with maturity.

In the end, Abia Warriors’ blend of composure, tactical awareness, and clinical finishing secured all three points, reinforcing their push for a continental slot.

They now face a stern test on the road against Rivers United in Port Harcourt, a fixture that could further define their ambitions this season.

This hard-fought victory highlights Abia Warriors' ability to deliver under pressure against high-caliber opponents. By maintaining tactical discipline and clinical execution, the team remains firmly in the hunt for a continental qualification spot. The focus now shifts to their upcoming away fixture, where they must sustain this momentum to solidify their standing in the NPFL.
