2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 33: Ruthless Kwara United boost survival hopes with emphatic win over El-Kanemi

Posted : 06 April 2026

Kwara United produced one of their most complete performances of the season, overpowering El-Kanemi Warriors 3-0 in a crucial Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 33 clash at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

With their NPFL status under threat, the Harmony Boys approached the contest with urgency and purpose—and it showed almost immediately. Just nine minutes in, Junior Aimufua capped off a slick attacking move, finishing calmly after being teed up by Samsudeen Mohammed to hand the hosts an early advantage.

Rather than sit back, Kwara United pressed harder, dominating possession and dictating the tempo through the midfield trio led by the influential Akanni Akeem. Alongside Gidado Toyeeb, Akeem ensured El-Kanemi found no rhythm, constantly breaking up play and launching forward movements.

The pressure told again in the 30th minute when Samsudeen Mohammed turned from provider to scorer, doubling the lead with a composed finish off a precise delivery from Akeem.

By halftime, Kwara United were firmly in control, though they could have extended their advantage further but for missed chances by Johnmark Aule.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Kwara United maintaining control and showing composure both on and off the ball. Akeem, in particular, stood out with an all-action display, orchestrating play and repeatedly unlocking the visitors’ defense.

The decisive third goal arrived in the 70th minute, putting the result beyond doubt. Abdulsalam Abdulsalam unleashed a powerful strike after another intelligent setup from Akeem, capping off a dominant team display.

El-Kanemi Warriors, on the other hand, endured a frustrating afternoon, struggling to create clear-cut chances and lacking the cutting edge needed to trouble the hosts.

After the match, Kwara United head coach Ashifat Suleiman praised his players’ commitment and focus, emphasizing the importance of the victory in their fight against relegation.

"This is the level we expect from the team. We are determined to keep pushing and secure our place in the league," he stated.

The result provides a timely boost for Kwara United as they continue their survival push. Attention now shifts to a potentially decisive Match Day 34 encounter away to Shooting Stars in Ibadan, where another positive result could further strengthen their bid to remain in the top flight.

This clinical performance ensures that Kwara United carries vital momentum into the final weeks of the season. By combining defensive solidity with an efficient attack, the Harmony Boys have given their supporters renewed hope of maintaining their top-flight status.
