2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 33: Deutsch’s survival creed drives Enyimba’s fightback in Bauchi

Posted : 05 April 2026

Enyimba FC Technical Adviser, Emmanuel Deutsch, stood firm on his season-defining philosophy of survival after his side clawed back a hard-earned 2–2 draw against Wikki Tourists in a pulsating 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 33 encounter at the Lafia City Stadium.

For Deutsch, this was more than just a point on the road; it was a statement of intent.

In a contest shaped by pressure, setbacks, and sheer willpower, Enyimba embodied their coach’s message: resilience above all. Twice they fell behind, and twice they rose, refusing to accept defeat in a campaign where every point carries the weight of survival.

Samuel Okechukwu ignited the comeback in the 55th minute with his first goal of the season, while substitute Nwaorisa Onyebuchi delivered the decisive blow deep into stoppage time, converting Wonah Williams’ inviting cross to rescue a crucial point.

After the match, Deutsch praised his players not just for the result, but for their unwavering commitment to the club’s primary objective: NPFL safety.

“This was a battle of survival, and my players showed character. They never gave up, even when the game became difficult,” he said.

Though he admitted a win would have better served their ambitions, Deutsch emphasized that the draw represents steady progress in their fight to steer clear of relegation.

“We wanted three points, no doubt. But this one point is important—it keeps us moving forward. We will build on it.”

Interestingly, Deutsch highlighted the psychological challenge of facing a 10-man opponent, noting that such scenarios often demand even greater discipline and focus.

“Playing against ten men is never easy. They become more determined, like wounded lions. You must stay alert.”

With just five matches remaining, the Cameroonian tactician remains resolute. His message is clear, confident, and unwavering—Enyimba’s destiny is still in their hands.

“We have games left, home and away and with this point, I strongly believe we will not be relegated.”

The match itself mirrored the tension of a relegation scrap. Wikki Tourists struck early against the run of play, setting the tone for a fierce encounter.

The game took a dramatic turn when their goalkeeper was sent off for bringing down Enyimba’s top scorer, Chidera Michael, outside the box.

Yet, even with the numerical advantage, Enyimba had to dig deep. Wikki showed grit to retake the lead, exposing defensive lapses and pushing the visitors to the brink, but Deutsch’s philosophy prevailed.

Enyimba’s persistence paid off in the dying moments, underlining a growing belief within the squad that survival is not just possible, it is inevitable.

Attention now shifts to Aba, where Enyimba will host Katsina United in what promises to be another defining fixture. For Deutsch and his men, the path is clear: fight, believe, and secure their NPFL status.

The result in Bauchi serves as a testament to the tactical discipline Deutsch has instilled during this critical period. As the season nears its conclusion, the Peoples Elephant appear to have found the necessary grit to navigate the pressures of the drop zone. With the home crowd in Aba behind them for the next fixture, the club looks poised to turn this momentum into the final points needed for safety.
