2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 32: Late drama defines Oriental Derby as Enyimba edge Abia Warriors

A tense Oriental Derby encounter swung in favour of Enyimba FC, who left it late to secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Abia Warriors in their NPFL Match Day 32 clash at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba.

In a contest shaped by urgency and nerves, Enyimba showed greater attacking intent after the break, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 60th minute through Chidiebere Micheal.

The goal injected belief into the hosts, who had earlier struggled to convert their chances.

However, the visitors responded with resilience and patience, and their persistence paid off late on when Emeka Obioma struck in the 88th minute to restore parity, momentarily silencing the home crowd.

Just as the game appeared headed for a draw, Enyimba found a lifeline deep into stoppage time.

A decisive penalty was awarded in the 90th minute, and Micheal stepped up to calmly convert, sealing all three points in dramatic fashion for the "People’s Elephant".

The result reflects Enyimba’s growing desperation in their fight to avoid relegation, with the Aba side capitalising on key moments despite evident inefficiencies in front of goal.

Speaking after the match, assistant coach Ijeh Okechukwu praised his team’s second-half response but acknowledged the need for sharper finishing and improved performances, especially in upcoming away fixtures.

On the other hand, Abia Warriors’ assistant coach Bethel Orji expressed disappointment at the outcome, noting that his side had targeted maximum points but ultimately had to accept the late penalty decision.

The victory lifts Enyimba to 15th position with 39 points, strengthening their survival push, while Abia Warriors remain sixth on the table with 49 points after 32 matches.

The dramatic conclusion to this Oriental Derby provides Enyimba with a massive psychological boost in their ongoing battle against the drop. While Abia Warriors will rue the late lapse in discipline, the "People's Elephant" demonstrated the grit necessary to secure their NPFL status. Both sides now turn their focus to the final stretch of the season as the league standings remain highly competitive.
