2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 31: Remo Stars revive survival hopes with comeback win over Kwara United

Posted : 23 March 2026

Remo Stars delivered a spirited second-half performance to secure a vital 3–1 comeback victory over Kwara United in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 31 clash at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

The visitors, Kwara United, showed early promise and looked the more dangerous side in the first half.

Their bright start paid off in the 34th minute when Ibrahim Yahaya calmly finished a well-worked counterattack, courtesy of an incisive pass from Junior Aimufua.

However, Remo Stars responded almost immediately. Just four minutes later, Ahmed Akinyele capitalized on a defensive lapse to restore parity, ensuring both teams went into halftime level at 1–1.

The turning point of the match came shortly after when Kwara United were awarded a penalty following a foul on Aimufua.

Ini Emmanuel stepped up but failed to convert, a miss that ultimately shifted momentum in favor of the hosts.

After the break, Remo Stars emerged with greater urgency and control, dictating play and putting the visitors under sustained pressure.

Their dominance eventually paid off in the 70th minute when Haruna Hadi fired them ahead.

Sensing vulnerability, the hosts quickly doubled their advantage just three minutes later, with Victor Mbaoma finishing off a swift attacking move to seal an emphatic comeback.

Kwara United struggled to recover from the double blow, as Remo Stars managed the remainder of the game effectively to secure all three points.

Reacting after the match, Kwara United head coach, Ashifat Suleiman, pointed to the missed penalty as a decisive moment.

“We were punished for not scoring the penalty, which could have been a turning point for us. It’s disappointing,” he admitted.

The result provides a much-needed boost for Remo Stars in their fight against relegation, although they remain in 18th position with 36 points.

Meanwhile, Kwara United will look to regroup quickly as they return home for crucial back-to-back fixtures in their bid to bounce back.

Remo Stars demonstrated remarkable resilience to overcome an early deficit and secure three points that could be vital for their league survival. The missed penalty by Kwara United served as the ultimate catalyst for a shift in momentum that the hosts exploited clinically in the second half. While Remo Stars remain in the drop zone, this victory provides the necessary belief to fight through the final weeks of the NPFL season.
