2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 23: Lagos Is Home to Me Despite Defeat, Says Aweroro

Posted : 30 January 2026

In spite of losing 0–1 to his former club, Ikorodu City FC, Nurudeen Aweroro has debunked any ill feelings, saying Lagos remains home to him.

Shooting Stars SC coach Aweroro was in the opposite dugout against Ikorodu City in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 23 fixture, a side he once guided to a near-loss of continental football last season.

Things did not go well for his side as Ikorodu City FC ran away with the much-needed maximum points courtesy of Joseph Arumala’s early strike, which proved to be the decider.

Arumala emerged the hero at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, scoring the decisive goal in the second minute to earn the Oga Boys maximum points.

Arumala pounced on a loose rebound after Shooting Stars goalkeeper Mustapha parried a shot from Tosin Oyedokun, rifling the ball into the roof of the net.

The match was also marked by emotional subplots, including the return of former Ikorodu City Sporting Director, Tobi Adepoju, who recently joined Shooting Stars.

Both sides created chances thereafter but failed to add to the scoreline, as Ikorodu City defended resolutely to secure all three points.

Speaking after the match, Aweroro said he felt no special emotions against his former club.

“Lagos is home to me, and I have enjoyed the time I have coached Ikorodu City.

“I came to Lagos to find a win because football is a game, but I couldn’t.

“I am not disappointed with the result because we tried to win, but it did not work for us,” he said.
