Enyimba International claimed a convincing 3–1 win over Kwara United in their 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 17 fixture, played on Sunday at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Samuel Agu unleashed a long-range effort that caught Kwara United goalkeeper Nurudeen off guard. Kwara United responded positively, and Toheeb Gidado equalised in the 31st minute, ensuring both teams went into halftime level at 1–1.
Enyimba returned from the break with greater intensity, and their sustained pressure paid off in the 59th minute. Chidera Michael capitalised on a defensive error to restore the People’s Elephant’s lead. The forward struck again just three minutes later, completing his brace in the 62nd minute to extend Enyimba’s advantage to 3–1.
Kwara United attempted to mount a comeback, with Akanni Akeem and Junior Aimufua both testing the Enyimba defence. However, their efforts were effectively contained by the home side’s backline and goalkeeper.
Speaking after the match, Kwara United head coach Ashifat Suleiman explained that forced tactical changes disrupted his team’s plans. He revealed that injuries to key players during the warm-up affected their approach.
“We had to alter our game plan early because two regular players, including midfielder Philip Ozor and one defender, sustained injuries during the warm-up,” Suleiman said. “Football can be unpredictable. We will regroup and prepare better for our next game.”
The result leaves Kwara United in 12th place on the NPFL table with 21 points from 17 matches. The Ilorin-based side will aim to bounce back when they host Bayelsa United next Sunday.
