Abia Warriors returned to winning ways in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 17 fixture with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over debutants Kun Khalifat FC at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri. The winning goal came courtesy of a brilliant second-half strike from forward Suraj Lawal.
The triumph ended the Warriors’ five-game winless run and marked their second successive victory at Dan Anyiam Stadium in two seasons, having beaten relegated Heartland by the same scoreline last season.
Warriors head coach Imama Amapakabo made a single change to the side that drew with Rivers United in their previous league fixture at the Umuahia Township Stadium, selecting Paul Samson over Chukwuemeka Obioma on the bench.
The first half was cagey, with both sides creating few opportunities. In the 42nd minute, Paul Samson’s effort narrowly missed the target, while Kun Khalifat responded immediately as former Warriors winger Moses Uche forced a spectacular save from goalkeeper Odah Okiemute.
The second half saw a more decisive approach from both teams following tactical changes from the benches. The breakthrough came in the 82nd minute when substitute Shedrack Asiegbu showcased his impact. Asiegbu delivered a precise pass into the box, where Suraj Lawal controlled it expertly, held off his marker, and fired the ball into the net to the delight of the Warriors’ bench and supporters.
Kun Khalifat pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were consistently repelled by a disciplined Abia Warriors defence comprising Innocent Gabriel, Kunle Adeleke, Somiari Alalibo, and second-half substitute Israel Joseph, whose technical display impressed the home crowd.
Abia Warriors now turn their attention to a home clash against Warri Wolves on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
