Sporting Lagos made a statement of intent in their opening fixture of the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 4, grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ranchers Bees at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.
In a contest that demanded patience and precision, the Lagos side found their match-winner through Alex Leme, whose well-taken header just before halftime ultimately proved decisive in a tightly balanced encounter.
From the outset, Sporting Lagos looked the more adventurous side, controlling possession and probing for openings.
Their early dominance produced a notable chance in the 17th minute when Seun Akanji tested the Bees’ goalkeeper, who reacted sharply to keep the game level.
Despite dictating the tempo, Sporting Lagos were repeatedly frustrated by a compact and disciplined Ranchers Bees defence that limited clear-cut opportunities.
Aliyu Baba and Akanji both showed flashes of creativity, but the final ball often lacked the precision required to break the deadlock.
The breakthrough came in the 40th minute, rewarding Sporting Lagos’ persistence. A fluid attacking move saw Shola Oladunjoye link up effectively with Akanji, whose inviting delivery into the box was met emphatically by Leme, as he powered a header beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
Holding onto their slender advantage after the interval, Sporting Lagos shifted focus to defensive solidity.
Ranchers Bees responded with increased urgency, pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but were met by a well-organised backline that stood firm under pressure.
The Lagos side’s game management in the closing stages underlined their discipline, as they successfully neutralised late threats to secure maximum points and an early edge in the competition.
Akanji’s influence on the game did not go unnoticed, as the winger’s creativity and assist earned him the Man of the Match accolade. Reflecting on the performance, he emphasised teamwork and the need for sustained focus as the tournament progresses.
The encounter also attracted notable football and administrative figures, including Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle and assistant Daniel Ogunmodede, alongside key stakeholders in Nigerian football.
With this result, Sporting Lagos take an early lead in the Super Four standings, while attention shifts to the next fixture between Doma United and Inter Lagos at the same venue.
Sporting Lagos demonstrated tactical maturity and defensive resilience to see out the win against a determined opponent. This opening victory sets a strong foundation for their campaign as they aim for continued success in the NNL Super 4 tournament.
