2025/2026 NNL Season: Gateway FC Fined, Relocated Over Matchday 9 Violence

Posted : 16 January 2026

Gateway United FC has been handed heavy sanctions by the Nigeria National League (NNL) following violent incidents during their Matchday 9 fixture against Smart City FC. The clash, played on January 10, 2026, at MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, ended in a 1–1 draw but was marred by harassment, intimidation, and physical assault on match officials.

According to an official decision signed by NNL Chief Operating Officer Danlami Ananana, Gateway FC breached several provisions of the league’s rules. Reports confirmed that supporters overpowered security personnel to attack officials, while club officials were also implicated.

Toyin Jimoh of Gateway FC was identified as a major security threat for issuing repeated threats before kickoff and contributing to the post-match violence. The Secretary of the Ogun State Football Association, representing the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), was reportedly intimidated and physically assaulted.

The NNL ruled that Gateway FC violated Articles 16.1, 16.1.1, 26.1, and 26.2 of the league’s regulations. The club has been fined ₦1,000,000 for end-of-match disturbances, ₦3,000,000 for assaulting officials, and ₦300,000 to cover medical expenses. Toyin Jimoh was suspended for four NNL matches (Match Nos. 46, 55, 57, and 64) for intimidation and harassment.

In addition, Gateway FC has been banished from their home ground, with their next two home fixtures—against Edel FC and Beyond Limits FC—relocated to Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ekiti State. The club has 72 hours to submit the names of all individuals involved in the assault and must settle all fines before the start of the second stanza of the 2025/2026 season. Failure to comply may result in further sanctions.

The NNL emphasized its zero-tolerance policy on violence, reaffirming its commitment to protecting match officials and ensuring discipline across the league. Gateway FC can either accept the sanctions under summary jurisdiction or lodge an appeal with the NFF within 24 hours.
