2025/2026 NNL Match Day 18: Gombe United pay the price despite final day win

Posted : 23 April 2026

Gombe United’s fate was sealed in cruel fashion on the final day of the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) season, as a convincing home victory ultimately proved meaningless in their fight for survival.

The Savannah Scorpions did what was required on the pitch, defeating Ranchers Bees 2–0 at the Pantami Stadium in a performance that briefly reignited hope among their supporters. But elsewhere, results failed to swing in their favour, leaving the Gombe-based side stranded in seventh position in Conference D.

Level on 15 points with Bichi FC, Gombe United were edged out on goal difference, a narrow margin that now defines their drop to the Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO).

It was a harsh conclusion for a team that showed late resilience but lacked consistency across the campaign.

Head coach Yusuf Salihu and his players walked off knowing they had fulfilled their part of the bargain on the final day, only to be undone by earlier shortcomings and the unforgiving arithmetic of the table.

In a twist of regional fortunes, fellow Northern side Doma United FC provided a bright counter-narrative. Having suffered relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) two seasons ago, they completed an impressive turnaround by securing promotion back to the top flight, offering a measure of pride for the region amid Gombe United’s disappointment.

Elsewhere in Conference D, the promotion race took a dramatic turn. Jigawa Golden Stars, who entered the final day with hopes of clinching a NPFL ticket, faltered when it mattered most.

Their heavy 3–0 defeat to Kebbi United saw them slip to third place with 18 points, effectively ending their ambitions.

That result opened the door for Ranchers Bees, who, despite their loss to Gombe United, still did enough across the season to finish top of the standings and secure promotion.

In the end, Match Day 18 delivered the full spectrum of football drama: elation, heartbreak, and fine margins. For Gombe United, it is a sobering reminder that survival is rarely decided in one game, but across the entirety of a demanding season.

The conclusion of the Conference D campaign leaves Gombe United reflecting on a season of missed opportunities as they prepare for life in the NLO. While Ranchers Bees and Doma United celebrate their ascent, the Savannah Scorpions must now regroup and strategize for a swift return to the professional ranks.
