2025/2026 NNL Match Day 13: Lawal’s spot-kick seals narrow win for Ekiti United over Abakaliki FC

Posted : 26 March 2026

Ekiti United FC needed patience and composure to secure a slim but vital 1–0 victory over Abakaliki FC in a closely fought Match Day 13 clash at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado Ekiti.

The encounter began on a solemn note, with both teams observing a minute of silence in honour of the late NFRA President, Alhaji Aliyu Zubairu.

From kickoff, the hosts asserted themselves, controlling possession and probing for openings. However, Abakaliki’s defensive organisation and sharp goalkeeping kept them at bay during the early exchanges.

Despite Ekiti’s dominance, the visitors remained dangerous on the counter, forcing goalkeeper Wale Makanjuola into a series of important saves.

The breakthrough eventually arrived five minutes before halftime. A foul on Damilola Adeyeye inside the penalty area handed the home side a golden opportunity, and Ayodeji Lawal made no mistake from the spot, calmly dispatching the penalty to give Ekiti United the lead.

The second half turned into a tactical battle, with both sides searching for an advantage. Abakaliki pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Ekiti’s defensive discipline held firm. Makanjuola proved decisive, producing crucial interventions to deny the visitors and preserve the narrow lead.

His commanding display between the sticks earned him the Man of the Match accolade, underlining his importance in securing all three points for the hosts.

After the game, Lawal highlighted his composure during the penalty, expressing satisfaction at helping his side maintain their strong home form.

Head coach Bolarinwa Idris also commended his players’ resilience, describing the victory as hard-earned against a determined opponent.

The result extends Ekiti United’s impressive unbeaten run at home, reinforcing their growing reputation as a difficult side to break down on familiar turf.

Attention now shifts to their next challenge, as they prepare for an away fixture against Akwa United FC on Sunday, March 29.

The narrow victory solidifies Ekiti United's position in the standings as they continue to make the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium a fortress. While Abakaliki FC showed great spirit, the clinical nature of Lawal and the heroics of Makanjuola proved to be the difference. The team will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming travels to maintain their pursuit of promotion.
