2024 President Federation Cup: Bendel Insurance pips Abeokuta Stormers 1-0

Defending champions Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin started their defense of the Federation Cup on Wednesday, May 1, with a bright start, securing a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Stormers Sports Club of Abeokuta to qualify for the round of 32 of the 2024 Federation Cup.


Chukwudi Meze scored the only goal of the match for the Benin Arsenals in the 61st minute, with substitute Paul Obata providing a fine pass for the lanky striker to skillfully slot the ball into the net, providing his side with much-needed relief.


The first half ended goalless despite Insurance strikers missing several scoring chances at the Area 3 field in Abuja.


Bendel Insurance had a lucky escape in the 18th minute when their goalkeeper, Joshua Baba, was pressured out of his 18-yard box, leaving an open net for a Stormers striker who shot wide.


The Benin Arsenals, who defeated Rangers 1-0 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium to win the 2023 title, will now await their next opponents in the round of 32.


However, the story is different for Edo state FA Cup runners-up, Ine Stars of Benin, as they exited the challenge cup after losing 2-1 to Kebbi United at the same venue in the first fixture of the day.
