2024/25 NPFL Fallout: Coach Aliyu Zubairu Bids Farewell to El-Kanemi Warriors

As El-Kanemi Warriors begin preparations for the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, the club will do so without its head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, who has officially announced his departure.

Zubairu’s exit marks the end of a remarkable two-year tenure during which he led the Desert Warriors back to the NPFL and guided them to victory in the 2024 President Federation Cup.

In an emotional farewell message, Zubairu expressed profound gratitude to the club’s management, players, technical crew, and passionate supporters for their unwavering belief in his vision. A former player of the club, Zubairu took pride in having represented El-Kanemi both on and off the pitch.

“From representing this club as a player to promoting it to the elite league as a coach, winning the President Federation Cup, and sustaining its NPFL status—it’s truly been an honor to represent this esteemed badge of Borno State,” he wrote.

He also acknowledged the tremendous support he received from the Borno State Government, particularly from Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Commissioner for Sports Saina Buba, and Borno FA Chairman Alhaji Babagana Kalli.

Coach Zubairu confirmed he would not renew his contract, citing a desire to pursue new professional challenges.

“I’ve decided not to renew my contract. This decision stems from my confidence that I’ve made a meaningful contribution to the club’s growth and development. Borno will always remain a home to me and dear to my heart.”

Currently serving as the Head Coach of the Flying Eagles of Nigeria, Zubairu leaves El-Kanemi Warriors with a legacy built on discipline, progress, and success.

His departure ushers in a new chapter for both the coach and the club, as the Warriors prepare for the challenges of the upcoming NPFL campaign under new leadership.
