2024/25 NNL Matchday 22: Osun United Defeat First Bank FC 3–1 to Secure Super 8 Spot

Osun United produced a commanding performance in their final fixture of the 2024/25 Nigeria National League (NNL) season, defeating First Bank FC 3–1 to book a place in the prestigious Super 8 promotion playoff.

The Gladiators wasted no time asserting dominance, with Ganiyu Gberefun opening the scoring in just the 2nd minute following a tough challenge on Emmanuel Essien. Just four minutes later, Essien made amends with a stunning long-range effort that doubled the lead, leaving First Bank goalkeeper Nurudeen Lateef helpless.

Backed by a vibrant home crowd, Osun United controlled possession and tempo throughout the first half, entering the break with a comfortable 2–0 advantage. The momentum carried into the second half, with Ebenezer Odeyemi and Gberefun consistently troubling the First Bank defense.

Despite the Bankers' attempts to rally, they struggled to penetrate a solid Osun United backline anchored by Gabriel Lekan and Agbor Paul.

Gberefun put the game beyond reach in the 76th minute, finishing clinically for his second of the day and tenth league goal of the campaign, extending the lead to 3–0.

First Bank FC grabbed a consolation in stoppage time—three minutes into the allotted four added—but it had little impact, as they were already safe from relegation thanks to favorable results elsewhere.

For Osun United, the win was more than three points—it was a confirmation of progress under Coach Seye Ajayi, whose tactical discipline and squad management have guided the club to within one step of promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

“I’m extremely proud of the players, the fans, and everyone who believed in us,” Coach Ajayi said post-match. “Now our focus shifts to the Super 8, where we’ll give everything to secure promotion.”

With morale high and momentum on their side, Osun United will look to carry their form into the promotion playoff and realize their dream of top-flight football.
