2024/2025 NWFL Super Six playoffs: League crown to the wire as Edo Queens stun Bayelsa Queens

Posted : 16 May 2025

The defending champions of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Edo Queens, put up a spirited display in a brave 1-0 win over the title-chasing Bayelsa Queens.

The 2023/2024 NWFL defending champions, Edo Queens, thus ended Bayelsa Queens’ 17-game unbeaten run with a hard-fought 1–0 victory on Matchday Four of the NWFL Premiership Super Six Playoffs in Ikenne.

The tightly contested match was decided by a 45th-minute strike from Goodness Osigwe, who had been introduced just 10 minutes earlier by head coach Moses Aduku.

Osigwe replaced Ijeoma Okeke in the 35th minute and made an immediate impact, rewarding her coach’s tactical decision.

The result throws the NWFL title race wide open, with four teams—including Edo Queens—still in contention ahead of Saturday’s decisive final round of matches.

Edo Queens, who now have seven points from four matches, can retain their league crown with a win over Nasarawa Amazons on the final matchday—provided other results go in their favour.

The Benin Arsenals are also eyeing a return to the CAF Women’s Champions League, having finished fourth in the 2024 edition.

Bayelsa Queens, who had gone through the regular season and early Super Six games unbeaten, must now bounce back against Naija Ratels FC to keep their title hopes alive.

Meanwhile, Remo Stars Ladies and Rivers Angels remain in the mix and will face off in another crucial fixture.

The final day promises high drama as the top teams battle for the league title and a coveted continental spot.
