The defending champions of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership, Edo Queens FC, have continued their winning streak as they battled to a 1-1 draw with Rivers Angels in their second match of the ongoing Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six.
The game, which took place in a tense atmosphere at the Remo Stars Stadium, saw Edo Queens take the lead in the 26th minute.
Emem Essien capitalized on a rebound from Rivers Angels’ goalkeeper, slotting the ball into the net to give her side the advantage.
However, Rivers Angels responded in the 38th minute courtesy of a gift from Valentina Uroko, who mistakenly turned the ball into her own net, beating her goalkeeper, Morufa Ademola.
Edo Queens dominated the match, with multiple attempts from key players like Emem Essien, Anjor Mary, Kafayat Mafisere, and Chioma Moses. Despite their efforts, they were unable to convert these chances into goals.
Edo Queens’ tactician, Moses Aduku, made strategic substitutions to strengthen the attack, but Osigwe Goodness’ brilliant right-footed shot was denied by the superb saves of Rivers Angels’ goalkeeper.
The defending champions’ shocking start to the title-playoff competition continues despite the hard luck in securing a win against Rivers Angels, after they outplayed their opponents.
With one point from two matches, Edo Queens will look to bounce back in their next fixture against Naija Ratels FC.
Their campaign for the Super Six title is far from over, and the team is focused on fighting for the top spot.
