As the curtain falls on the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership regular season on Wednesday, April 30, the Owerri-based Heartland Queens will conclude their campaign against former champions and two-season rivals, Nasarawa Amazons, in Game 14 at the main bowl of the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Imo State.
With the regular season coming to a close, this will be the fourth encounter between the premier league teams. The Owerri side will sign off with a blank slate for the season, while the Solid Miners Babes will exit on a high note, having secured a back-to-back spot in the NWFL Premiership Super Six playoffs.
Heartland Queens were familiar with top-flight challenges in the previous season, but currently, they are struggling, fighting hard to stay clear of the relegation zone.
Both teams come into Wednesday’s clash with mixed fortunes from their respective Game 13 matches. While Heartland Queens lost 0-1 to fellow relegation battlers and campaigners, Dannaz Ladies, in Lagos, the Nasarawa Amazons stunned the defending champions, Edo Queens, with a 1-0 victory in Lafia.
There’s not much at stake for Nasarawa Amazons in the final game of the regular season, except perhaps pride. However, for Heartland Queens, this is essentially a must-win game — first to ease the tension among their frustrated fans, then to improve their final position on the table and end a challenging season on a high note.
Heartland Queens' head coach, Obi Ogbala, made his mark with Nasarawa Amazons years ago. The Owerri side also boasts former Amazons' key players, including captain Chimebere Opara, Blessing Saleh, and goalkeeper Uchenna Chukwu.
Ogbala will likely field the team’s best goalkeeper, Amarachi Atulayo, along with the tough quartet of Oluomachi Onwere, Nnenna Williams, Ebubechi Ozuruigbo, and Prisca Nwachukwu. Midfielders Faith Samson, Oluchi Okwara, and young talent Endurance Omoraka will likely receive their due recognition, while Opara, Saleh, Onyinyechi Kalu, and Emmanuella James may be tasked with pushing for goals.
A victory against Nasarawa Amazons would be a sweet way for Heartland Queens to close out the season, allowing them to shift their focus to the 2025 President Federation Cup Round of 16 match against non-league side Onimarge FC in Benin City over the weekend.
