2024/2025 NWFL Match Day 14: Heartland Queens end NWFL Season in style

Posted : 02 May 2025

Heartland Queens signed off their 2024/2025 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) campaign in emphatic fashion, edging out high-flying Nasarawa Amazons 2-1 in a thrilling clash at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.

With pride and momentum at stake, the Owerri-based side came out firing on all cylinders, applying relentless pressure on the Amazons’ backline from the opening whistle.

Their attacking intent was evident as they pinned the visitors deep in their own half, orchestrated by the electric Umejiaku Oluebube, who was a constant thorn in the side of the Nasarawa defense.

The breakthrough finally came in the 42nd minute after Umejiaku was brought down in the box following a surging run, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot. Up stepped Faith Samson, who coolly dispatched the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to hand the Landladies a deserved lead going into the break.

The second half saw Heartland maintain their dominance, and they doubled their advantage in the 62nd minute.

Once again, it was the outstanding Faith Samson who rose highest to meet a perfectly delivered set-piece, nodding home with precision to notch her brace and cap off a stellar performance.

Nasarawa Amazons, to their credit, refused to go down without a fight. They pulled one back in the 71st minute through Kesiana Ojiyovwo, who reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box and slotted home from close range to make it 2-1.

Despite the late surge, Heartland Queens held firm at the back to secure the win, capping their season with three crucial points that see them finish 6th on the NWFL log. Nasarawa Amazons, already assured of a place in the NWFL Super Six, remain in 3rd position.

Attention now turns to the Presidential FA Cup Round of 16 this weekend. Heartland Queens will lock horns with Onimarge FC, while Nasarawa Amazons face a stern test against fellow league heavyweights Bayelsa Queens.

With both sides looking to make a deep run in the prestigious knockout tournament, fans can expect more fireworks in the days ahead.
