2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 38: Rivers United FC, a team to beat inspite of league title loss

Posted : 25 May 2025

In spite of losing the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) crown to the eventual winners, Remo Stars FC, Rivers United FC still remains a team to beat among others in the elite club competition.

It is on record that the Pride of Rivers did not miss the crown due to poor performance, but lost it to a more efficient club side.

Rivers United coach, Finidi George, right from the blast of the first whistle, has set his sights on securing the CAF Champions League ticket.

The former Super Eagles winger, now leading a largely rebuilt Rivers United squad, emphasized the need for growth in his side—but also reminded what separated them from this season’s eventual champions, Remo Stars.

“In everything you pursue in life, challenges are inevitable, but you must commit to succeeding despite them,” Finidi said in a recent interview.

“The key is to never give up. Stay resilient, keep moving forward, and eventually, success will follow.”

These aren’t just the words of a football tactician — they are the voice of a man who has walked the path from grassroots to global glory.

From his days as a UEFA Champions League winner with Ajax to now leading one of Nigeria’s top clubs, Finidi has experienced both the highs and lows of competition. But through it all, he’s never wavered on the value of resilience.

His message serves as a timely reminder in a culture obsessed with overnight success. Whether you’re an athlete, student, entrepreneur, or artist, the road to excellence is rarely smooth.

There will be rejections, failures, and moments of doubt. But as Finidi puts it, “stay resilient, keep moving forward.”

For the last match of the season, to be played in front of the home crowd at the Adokiye Aniesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Finidi will go up against another excellent coach, Salisu Yusuf of Nasarawa United, a man who has been able to galvanize his team from a relegation fight to a comfortable position on the NPFL table with outstanding results.

While the Pride of Rivers have sealed their place as the second-placed team on the NPFL log, Nasarawa United will seek to enhance their status as a force to reckon with.
