2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 37: Kwara United FC thrash Rivers United FC in Ilorin

Posted : 12 May 2025

Kwara United FC delivered a blistering performance on Sunday to defeat second-placed Rivers United FC 3-1 at the Main Bowl of the Rashidi Yekini/George Innih Stadium in Ilorin, in their Matchday 37 fixture of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The Harmony Boys came out strong, dominating from kickoff with Shola AbdulRaheem and Akanni Akeem dictating the tempo in midfield, while Wasiu Alalade applied consistent pressure in attack.

Defensively, Kabir Mohammed, Afeez Bankole, Victor Adeoye, and Saheed Olaniyi ensured solidity at the back.

Their dominance was rewarded in the 39th minute when Issa Gatta opened the scoring, finishing off a brilliant pass from Akanni Akeem to give the hosts a 1–0 lead at halftime.

Kwara United intensified their momentum in the second half. In the 59th minute, Wasiu Alalade doubled the advantage with a clinical finish from Junior Aimufua’s precise cross. Substitute Mohammed Alao, who replaced Akanni Akeem, added creativity and control in midfield, and his influence paid off when Alalade completed his brace in the 81st minute.

Rivers United pulled one back via a penalty after Kabir Mohammed was adjudged to have impeded a goal-bound situation.

Reacting to the victory, Coach Tunde Sanni said that although the team scored three goals, it wasn’t an easy game. He praised his players for responding when it mattered most and emphasized the importance of having time to prepare for the upcoming FA Cup semifinal following their improved NPFL standing.

Wasiu Alalade’s two-goal heroics earned him the Cyteck Man of the Match Award, proudly sponsored by Engr. Ahmed Olaide.

Kwara United now move up to 12th on the league table with 50 points after 37 games. They will wrap up their season away to Katsina United on May 25.
