The 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season has been a tough one for Akwa United FC, having fought for survival from Match Day 1 up until Match Day 37.
The club has also experienced three managerial changes this season—starting with Fatai Amao, then Babaganaru, and currently Kennedy Boboye—yet the Promise Keepers have continued to struggle.
Just like last season, the former league champions are looking to escape relegation in the final moments of the season, as continental ticket-chasing Bendel Insurance come knocking in Uyo.
However, the chances are slim for Boboye's side. Unless they score at least five goals past Bayelsa United—who have already escaped the same relegation battle—other relegation-threatened teams may capitalize on the situation.
Akwa United FC’s last game will be against another relegation-threatened team, Heartland FC, who are 16th on the NPFL log with 45 points—four points ahead of them—making Akwa's position more precarious.
The Promise Keepers are currently 18th with 41 points, and their survival hopes are hanging by a thread.
They’ve lost 17 matches—joint-most alongside Sunshine Stars—while only bottom-placed Lobi Stars have fared worse and are already relegated.
Bayelsa United, having seen their eight-game unbeaten run ended by Ikorodu City, will aim to return to winning ways, regardless of Akwa United’s desperate position.
Akwa need a miracle to survive, and this match will surely define their final stand.
Head to Head
