2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 36: Meyinwa delivers as Bendel Insurance pips Akwa Utd in Benin

Bendel Insurance returned to winning ways on Wednesday as they defeated Akwa United 1-0 on Match Day 36 of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).


Skipper Meyinwa Oritseweyinmi scored the only goal of the match in the 53rd minute, giving the Benin Arsenals a deserved 1-0 victory over the relegation-threatened side at the famous Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.


Insurance FC had struggled to secure maximum points in their last two home games against Rangers Int'l and Nasarawa United.


The Benin Arsenals now have 53 points, maintaining 6th place on the league table. They will be at home again on Match Day 37 against Heartland FC of Owerri, with the match scheduled for Sunday, May 11, 2025.


Recall that Bendel Insurance held Akwa United to a 1-1 draw in their first-round encounter in Uyo.


Speaking during the post-match interview, Head Coach Greg Ikhenoba said he was happy to secure the maximum points, but admitted that his players did not perform to his satisfaction despite the 1-0 win.


“The important thing for us is the victory. Let me thank the players for the win. There is room for improvement ahead of our next game.”
