Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sunshine Stars of Akure in a Matchday 36 fixture on Wednesday.
Played behind closed doors at the Lekan Salami Stadium, the encounter was keenly contested, with the Oluyole Warriors being more offensive than the Owena Whales, who battled hard to keep the hosts at bay.
The Ibadan soccer lords had several opportunities to score in the first half but were undone by poor finishing, caused by anxiety, as well as the agility of Sunshine Stars' goalkeeper.
With the first half ending in a stalemate, both sides returned for the second half with renewed vigor. Shooting Stars pressed further, while Sunshine Stars doubled their defensive efforts.
The defining moment came in the closing stages of the encounter when the visitors were reduced to ten men in the 85th minute after one of their players was shown a red card for a foul.
Two minutes later, Shooting Stars' pressure paid off when a Sunshine Stars defender, in a bid to stop a goal-bound shot, handled the ball in the 18-yard box. The referee wasted no time in pointing to the penalty spot.
Left-back Ikouwem Utin made no mistake from the spot, calmly sending the visitors' goalkeeper the wrong way for the only goal of the match.
The win takes Shooting Stars' points tally to 51 from 36 matches, earning the team an upward movement on the table. The Oluyole Warriors will now travel to the ancient city of Kano for a Matchday 37 clash against Kano Pillars on Sunday.
