The chances of Rivers United catching up with the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table toppers, Remo Stars, have been shattered as they lost the 2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 35 fixture to an Ahmed Musa-inspired Kano Pillars FC by 2-0.
Musa was once again on target as Sai Masu Gida spanked Rivers United 2-0 in a crucial NPFL Week 35 match at the Sani Abacha Stadium.
The result was a major blow for former Enyimba International FC coach, Finidi George, whose Rivers United side was still chasing the NPFL title.
The Pride of Rivers needed at least a draw to stay in the race and catch up with league leaders Remo Stars, but the defeat now leaves them seven points behind with only three games left.
After a goalless first half, Nigeria international and 2013 AFCON winner Ahmed Musa opened the scoring in the 63rd minute, finishing off a neat pass from Zulkifilu Muhammad. Veteran midfielder Rabiu Ali later doubled the lead from the penalty spot, scoring his 12th goal of the season.
Musa’s goal was his eighth of the campaign, showing he still has the quality and experience to make a difference. His performance was a reminder of why he remains one of Nigeria’s most respected footballers.
Finidi George, who won the NPFL with Enyimba last season, now faces a tough task to inspire Rivers United in their final three matches. While they are not yet out of the title race, this defeat has made their challenge much harder.
Ahmed Musa’s influence on and off the pitch continues to be vital for Kano Pillars, and his latest goal could play a big part in shaping the outcome of this season’s title race.
Speaking after the match, Rivers United Technical Adviser Finidi George admitted that Kano Pillars deserved the victory.
Finidi said that his team would focus on securing maximum points in their remaining home games of the season.
“If we look at the overall performance and the chances created, Kano Pillars deserved to win,” Finidi stated in a post-match interview.
“For us, we have to go back and see how we can win our home games, which I am very confident about.”
Rivers United remain in second position on the league table with 58 points.
