It was yet another day for Plateau United FC's forward, Vincent Temitope, as his lone goal secured a vital three points in the match against the visitors, Akwa United, who had been on a three-match winning streak.
Recall that Akwa United FC coach, Kennedy Boboye, was named Manager of the Month for March following his impressive wins with the Promise Keepers.
Coach Boboye guided Akwa United to four wins and one draw in five matches during the month.
He overcame challenges from Rivers United coach, Finidi George, Bayelsa United coach, Ladan Bosso, and Plateau United coach, Mangut Mbwas, to win the award.
However, the two consecutive wins for the Promise Keepers were short-lived as Vincent struck in the 22nd minute to put his side in the lead, a lead that was maintained until the final whistle in the 94th minute.
Mohammed Umar had an opportunity to add another in the 40th minute, but the Akwa United goalkeeper saved his goal-bound shot.
The Peace Boys relentlessly tried to double the lead, with two efforts in the 70th and 71st minutes. David Onovo made a brilliant drive, but his effort was saved for a corner kick, after which the resultant kick by Mohammed Umar was also saved.
The last chance for the Peace Boys came in the 94th minute when Sunday Anthony’s attempt went wide.
Speaking after the match, the coach of Plateau United, Mangut Mbwas, described the match as a good show despite the low scoreline.
Though happy with the result, he acknowledged that they expected a difficult match because of Akwa United's position.
Coach Mbwas said, "I’m happy with the result, though we expected a difficult game because of their position on the log, and we too needed to be up there. The team is improving, although the season has witnessed many complications, such as points deductions, lack of full support from home, and more."
"It takes a lot of courage for a player to withstand all these, with our fans expecting us to do better and finish the season well. It is our resolve to finish strong."
The coach assured that they would continue to improve, as they would not take any of the remaining games for granted. They are working to achieve positive results and leave the team in a position where the supporters will be pleased with them.
On Vincent Temitope being a marked man by every team that plays against Plateau United, Mangut stated that it is normal for teams to focus on their opponents' strengths and weaknesses. So, his presence on the pitch could be a distraction for opponents. "It’s normal for every team to analyze their opponents' strengths and weaknesses. Vincent is one of our strengths, but sometimes, he could be a distraction for the team, allowing other players to do the damage. His composure and how he handles all these is what makes him a star."
In response, Coach Kennedy Boboye unequivocally stated that they didn’t play up to standard according to his judgment, and a silly mistake accounted for the goal by Plateau.
Coach Boboye expressed their desire to keep pushing and working to avoid relegation. He congratulated Plateau United, as both teams have previously won the league.
"I think we played better, but we failed to capitalize on other chances created," he said.
