2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 34: Bad day in office for Amapakabo, as ruthless Katsina United scores

Posted : 20 April 2025

It was a day to forget in a hurry for Abia Warriors of Umuahia, as they were thrashed 5-1 by Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Match Day 34 of the ongoing 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Two quick goals inside the first two minutes set the tone for an unanticipated outcome in a game where the Warriors struggled to cope with the scorching weather and a very hot synthetic pitch.

The Warriors' starting lineup featured only one change from the squad that beat Rivers United last weekend, with Maxwell Kangeshima getting the gaffer's nod ahead of Paul Samson.

Spectators were still making their way into the arena when the hosts took the lead within a minute, as Mubarak Said's corner kick sailed straight into the net for the first goal.

Just a minute later, Katsina doubled their lead. Fighting for survival in the Premier League, the hosts capitalized on laxity at the heart of the visitors' defense. Former Abia Warriors hitman Lukman Bello latched onto the ball and fired past the onrushing goalkeeper to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.

Anthony Ijoma reduced the deficit, scoring his 11th goal of the campaign in the 11th minute by converting a cross from Ojonugwa Adejoh.

Despite the goal, the visitors were visibly troubled by the intense heat, and Maxwell Kangeshima appeared to be the most affected.

It was no surprise when he was withdrawn at halftime by coach Imama Amapakabo, alongside Augustine Njoku, who sustained a hamstring injury, and Ayodele Ezekiel.

The Warriors began the second half in search of an equalizer, but they were undone by Abdulbari Nura's long-range strike in the 57th minute.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors when a quick counterattack by the hosts resulted in Lukman Bello scoring his second goal of the game in the 59th minute to make it 4-1 for Katsina United.

The hosts wrapped up the game when substitute Taofeeq Ahmed scored in the first minute of the three additional minutes indicated by the fourth official, handing the Warriors their heaviest defeat of the season.

Next up for the Warriors is a home game against Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
